LEGO Technic

What is "Technic 8284"

"Technic 8284" is the name of our project made for the contest called "The best project made in 3D MCAD UGS SOLID EDGE Edu. system". "Technic 8284" is the LEGO TECHNIC tractor with 837 parts. It presents perfect academical examples of mechanical tools like gears, differential mechanism, clutch, the idea of the engine with pistons, connecting-rods and cranked shaft. It figures as a "toy" but in the view of engineering experts it looks much different...
Idea

The general idea of this project was to create advanced 3D numerical model of vehicle with mechanical tools to show our skills off in using CAD modeling. It is not easy for us (students) to find specification sheets of large assembly from the industry. Companies keep their "know-how" and we understand it, so after days of brainstorm we choose "Technic 8284"
Main egineering problems

The main engineering problem which caused during modeling this project was, how to model gear with no dimensions of reference diameter and module using only slide caliper. Measurements of such a small parts were impossible in academical way. We used new precision slide caliper but in some cases a single part must have had a 0,001 precision to work without collisions with other parts in large assembly. One of the most interesting problem was how to match some groups of parts to avoid plastic deformations in the "real model". "Reverse Engineering" was not simple in this case. After weeks of study Solid Edge tools and the "real model" all problems were solved with highest possible precision. Single parts were created without visible surfaces after shrinkage, signs after polymer injection and signs of ejecting from the mold.
